Something you probably already know if you listen to Bad on Paper: I love goals. While others are bemoaning how hard January is without the added pressure of improving every aspect of your life, I’m buying new notebooks and making tracking spreadsheets. But this year, my relationship with goals is more fraught.
The other week, Olivia asked me a question about goals on air and I panic-reacted as if she’d invited me to strip naked in front of a live studio audience. Come to find out, she was asking if I had any silly fall bucket list goals (answer: eat an apple cider donut), but it made me realize I have some serious goal-related stress at the moment. Probably because I’m not meeting many of mine this year, and I hate failure.
On TikTok (which I also have a fraught relationship with at the moment), “October Theory” is trending. Basically, the idea that October is a mini-January, but with more daylight and motivation, which makes it the perfect time to supercharge any 2024 goals you’ve slipped on OR get a head start on 2025 goals. So, I thought it was time to check in on how I’m doing. Maybe it’s not as bad as I fear…
