You’re Invited: A Totally Fake Blue Sisters Fantasy Book Club
What we’re eating, drinking, and discussing
Alright, I’m gonna *waves arms around* try something here. I recently read and adored Blue Sisters by Coco Mellors. As an only child, there’s something so mythical to me about sisterhood. It’s a club I’ll always be on the outside of, and this book gave me a way to press my greasy fingers to the glass and peer inside.
After I finished, I got to thinking… what would the perfect book club for this book look like?
Maybe this is a one-off. Maybe this is the start of a series (let me know if you like it in the comments). You can join me in this slice of fantasy and chime in with your wildest additions in the comments OR maybe you want to steal some or all of this for an epic in-person book club of your own.
(FYI: if you haven’t read the book, there will be light spoilers below, but nothing major.)
What’s the book about? The novel follows the three Blue sisters—Avery: a strait-laced corporate lawyer living in London and contemplating starting a family with her wife; Bonnie: an ex-professional boxer biding her time as a bouncer at an LA bar; and Lucky: a hard-partying fashion model intent on blowing up her career—in the aftermath of the death of their fourth sister, the angelic Nicky.
What are the major themes of this book? Sisterhood. Addiction. Grief.
When’s book club? Even though most of the present action takes place over the summer, there’s a strong melancholy—a blue mood, if you’ll excuse my bad pun—that hangs over the book. We’ll convene some time after Daylight Savings ends on November 3, when we start to get into those bleak days where the sun sets at 4 p.m.
Where are we hosting? Since this is our first meeting, I’m happy to host at my apartment in Brooklyn. The Blue family home is on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, so there’s a strong New York presence to the book. Alternately, maybe we can pile onto some sofas at the Chiltern Firehouse in London, another important city to the book.
Who’s on the guest list?
Me: Obviously. I’m hosting.
Cara Delevingne: I think Cara would relate to Lucky’s plotline as a model deep in the party scene.
Simone Biles: As an elite athlete in an individual sport, I’d love to hear Simone’s thoughts on Bonnie, another female athlete who’s given everything to reach her physical peak.
Nora Stephens from Book Lovers: Sure, she’s fictional, but so is this book club. Like Avery, Nora raised her younger sister and is dripping with hyper-competent, over-compensating older sister energy.
