This list is the validation I needed after feeling like an uncultured swine for having read approximately 5 of the books on the NYT list

Honestly same

Ha! I only read 5 on the NYT list as well. Already up to 33 on this list. Much prefer this one!

The Idea of You at 33 is a BOP victory.

I'm guessing The Nightingale, All The Light We Cannot See, and Tomorrow x3 for top 20, because I like to project 😂

I have said out loud “That’s what that book is about?!” More than 5 times while reading this list. You are crushing these descriptions! I’m convinced Book Lovers and PWMOV are Henry’s best and no one can convince me otherwise!

Truly my jaw has been on the floor finding out what some of the ones I haven’t read are about that have complete different synopses I’ve fully made up in my head.

I have loved following this list! Thank you! I became a subscriber for this list and I know from these entries and the comments and convo that I’ve found a lovely book community ❤️

Shocked to see that there’s no Sally Rooney on the list yet (IIRC), maybe tomorrow?!

Loving this Beach-Read-as-top-EmHen validation!!!!

I've read 13 of these!! The house in the cerulean sea is a big favorite

My unpopular opinion is that I did not like The Goldfinch and almost dnf-ed twice. The audiobook during commutes was really the only thing that kept me going.

Book Lovers and Happy Place so far are my favorite Emily Henry books, but I also really enjoyed People We Meet on Vacation

americanah was soooo good. worth a reread.

for tomorrow - maybe something from the american royals series, educated, more TJR, the push, or leave the world behind? personally, i'm hoping for cover story, I really enjoyed it.

I feel like I need to reread Americanah, too! Also? Love that there are books I adore on this list (John Boyne, how could I have forgotten you?) and books I hated on this list (ahem, no comment)

I’m seeing I have very different reading habits than even this list! 😂 I read a ton but have only read a a dozen or more from this list so far. Shows the vast endlessness of books.

Interesting! What are a few of your faves that you feel like represent your taste. Now I’m curious!

I forgot to add Blackcake to my list! That book was fantastic and definitely deserves a spot.

I've read 15 of these! Bringing total to 51.

So happy seeing The Idea of You on Here. The Heart’s Invisible Furies was so so good. I love Kristin Hannah but once a friend pointed out that she follows the same formula in all her books, I was ruined a bit. I still did really love The Women.

Expand full comment

I should not admit this, but I’ve never read a Kristin Hannah! Please don’t take away my book newsletter.

you are fine. I do objectively enjoy them. But the formula and the emotional warfare, ugh!

Expand full comment

Kristin Hannah uses like, seven similes per page - praise for The Nightingale was sooo baffling to me bc the whole plot was like "pretty women can be badass!!!!!"

Expand full comment

I read 25% of The Women waiting for a plot to appear or the writing to improve before deciding to DNF it! 😐

Expand full comment

ha ha - i actually liked the plot, I just hate her formula!

This! I enjoyed the Great Alone (and according to Goodreads I also liked the Nightingale but have no memory of it). But I was so incredibly turned off by first 50 pages of The Four Winds that I've sworn off Kristin Hannah since then. The emotional warfare is just too much!

she ALWAYS chooses (emotional) violence!!!!!

So many of my favorites on here! But especially glad to see the Night Circus love. Hands down one of the best books 🩷

i’d forgotten about “the heart’s invisible furies” in going through the times lists, but definitely would be on my top ten of the century. such an amazing book.

I have recommended it to SO many people!

Justice for PWMOV! It’s my favorite too and I feel like it always gets panned!
